Top 5 Large Cities with the Lowest Crime Rate

At a time with so much distress and concern over the economy, in an effort to get work many people are either making moves out of state, or are considering it.  A recent article profiled five cities with the highest crime rate in America.  Today we list the top five cities with the lowest crime rate.  If you have a family, and are concerned about good schools, then simply going to where work is may not be the only factor in choosing where to relcate to.

Top 5 Large Cities with Low Crime

It is much simpler for cities with a small population to maintain a low crime rate. It is generally the cities with the larger populations, over 300,000 people that have the highest crime rates. Despite this statistic, there are some highly populated cities that have low crime rates. The following is a list of the top five large cities with little crime.

Number 1:Scottsdale, AZ

Scottsdale, Arizona takes position number one because they have the nation’s lowest violent crime rating. On average, the nation’s violent crime rate is at 346 per every 100,000 people. Scottsdale averages 177 violent crimes per every 100,000 people. This low number of violent crimes puts them at 50% below the national level, and 61% below the state crime rate.

Number 2: Plano, TX

Plano, Texas has a crime rate below that of the national average in three areas: violent crimes, property crimes, and overall crime index. Coming in at a whopping 35% below the national violent crime average, it is no surprise that Plano lands the number two spot on the top cities with the lowest crime rate. The low crime rate in Plano may be linked to them having some of the best education rates, and a low cost of living.

Number 3: Virginia Beach, VA

It’s nice to know that there is still a vacation destination with a low crime rate. Virginia Beach’s crime rate is 30% less than the national average. The number of assaults per every 100,000 people in this city is a minute 97 compared to the national average of 240. Virginia Beach is one of the few cities where you can enjoy nice weather, beaches, and low crime.

Number 4: Fremont, CA

Fremont, California may not be the most desirable place to visit in California compared to the more frequented San Francisco. The number of violent crimes in Fremont is 29% below the state average, and 17% less than the national average. Despite the increase in the cost of living in California, Fremont has managed to maintain a low property crime rate. Although topping the majority of the low crime charts, it does not top the chart for vehicle theft. In fact, the number of vehicle thefts that occur in Fremont nearly doubles the national yearly average.

Number 5: Honolulu, HI

Matching Virginia Beach with being a tourist attraction and having a low crime rate is Honolulu, Hawaii. Honolulu is also comparable to Virginia Beach because the numbers of yearly car thefts that occur more than double the national average. Despite these thefts, the number of violent crimes in Honolulu is 18% below the U.S. average. This is surprising considering the large population and number of tourists that visit.

All five of the aforementioned cities have a population of over 200,000 residents. The cities were rated based on the average number of violent crimes and property crimes. However, more weight was placed on the violent crimes portion to determine the amount of crime in cities. Therefore, a city may have received a higher crime rate if more violent crimes occur than in other cities.
