While we may be speaking in extreme terms when we mention the fall of the American government, what would happen if the dollar were worth absolutely nothing? Would we have the need for another system of government based on a monetary value, or would we have to go back to a more basic approach that would be more about trading for services like bartering?
America the fallen
A future journal entry might read: It’s been ten years since the fall of our American government and as I take a look around me, I finally take in the full scope of what happened in the hours after the assassination of the first African American president and his family.
It’s almost impossible to grasp the idea that this all came about over a simple bill that would have increased the nation’s ability to pay its debts to those that counted on them. It wasn’t so much the fact that America would have to pay its debt, hell back then as Americans, we were all in the same boat.
A terrible recession, the nation struggling to create new jobs, people having to retrain to learn new job skills, while people all across America were not just losing their homes…they were losing sight of the American dream. And then came the debt ceiling crisis.
A Government’s failure to compromise
The news of what was going on in Washington really didn’t seem to resonate with everyone. People went about their business. If you didn’t read the newspapers and watch television around that time, then you were pretty ignorant to what was going on. And if you were paying attention, you probably either didn’t understand how dire the situation was, or you just shook your head in disgust.
Our politicians in Washington couldn’t make the right decision for the country and her people and just pass this bill. There was too much political wrangling going on. President Barack Obama had made his usual Saturday morning speech to the nation over the radio waves explaining the situation to those of us who were listening. He had told us that this was the time for compromise; unfortunately his words fell on deaf ears.
The impossible
No one thought that it would happen, but it did. And it didn’t happen all at once, no it was a gradual decay into madness. Because of political postulating, the politicians in Washington never passed the debt ceiling bill, and the fall of the government didn’t come right away, it came almost systematically.
Much as other Americans do when they do not have enough money to pay all the bills, hard decisions had to be made as to what or rather who was paid first. As the money slowly trickled away, so did services.
Those who waited on social security checks were the first to feel the effects, as it was decided in Washington to cut their benefits first. Checks were either slow in coming or never came at all, with no explanation as to when checks would be sent out to retirees. Then came the cuts to Medicare physicians. When this happened, they had to stop providing much needed aid to those that were covered under Medicare benefits. Then things began to spiral out of control, with other countries seeing that America was finally vulnerable.
Enemies strike financially
First they came after us financially, calling in all of the debt that they held in those treasury bonds that they had purchased, and this bankrupted us. That outstanding debt added to America’s already burdened financial system, stretched it beyond its limits until it just came apart. Then came the military attacks, and America was pummeled. Then came the decision to destroy those countries that were attacking us, through the use of our nuclear weapons.
Much to our chagrin, our enemies had actually made better nuclear weapons then America had, and we succumbed to overwhelming forces of their combined armies, and the rest as they say is history.
America on the edge
Of course this was a tale created from my imagination, but there are things in this tale that are true, if you haven’t been paying attention to the politics that are taking place in Washington at the moment then you may want to wake and and smell the coffee…because it’s burning black!
While its politics as usual for those in power in Washington, these people are playing with our lives and financial futures (if you happen to have one at this point!) and we can’t let them get away with this any longer. If your elected official is not fighting for your best interests, then you need to make your voice heard and contact them. By the time that you actually read this article, we may already be in a situation that we have never been in before. And if that’s the case then to hell with another election in 2012, let’s worry about 2011 people.
I still want to be able to wake up each day and say that I love my country, that it’s the best country in the world, and that politics can be put aside for things other than disasters that kill millions because of the mechanization's of terrorists who think that when they die they will be greeted by thousands of untouched virgins.
