  • Money, Greed, Satan and the NBA   1 year 29 weeks ago

Technically, the players did not go out on strike. The owners locked them out. It's not only money that is the issue here. Players want to be able to work for who they choose. You and I can leave our jobs for a better one at any time. So players feel like they should be able to do the same. Plus, when you buy a jersey and it has a player's name on the back and his number on it, the players want a cut of that sale. Neither of these are unreasonable from a player's standpoint.

What players don't seem to get are two things.

One is the owners will still be rich whether basketball is played or not. They don't need basketball. If an owner wakes up tomorrow and his money is gone, it will have nothing to do with the fact that there was no basketball played this year. Players? Not so much. So the owners are in control here. It's not like a player making millions playing for the Nuggets, covered in tattoos from head to toe, can go get a job in a three piece suit tomorrow making millions.

Two is that they are not in a traditional business. If McDonalds puts Wendy's and Burger King out of business, hooray for them. That means everyone will have to eat at McDonalds. If the Lakers put the Timberwolves, Nuggets, Rockets, Spurs and all the other franchises out of business, not so good for them. Without those other "businesses" there is no need for the Lakers. So it behooves the Lakers and all the "big market" teams to keep the little guys in the game. This cannot be done by running these franchises like a true free market enterprise. The object is to crush them on the basketball court, not in the market. Players do not seem to get that.

Three is that while that jersey may have James #6 on it, it also has Miami on it too. So a 50-50 split seems to be more than fair.

But do not for one minute think this is about players being greedy. The players are taking a lot of hits in their pocket regardless. They are trying to take as few as possible. Can't really blame them for that.

  • Hey Lew, I thought we already were a communist nation   1 year 29 weeks ago

First of all, people need to do some research of political history and know what they are saying when they use these kinds of terms. It's like calling the USA a democracy, when we have never been (and hopefully never will be) a democracy, where mob rules apply. We are a democratic Republic. It's like using the phrase right-wing fascism, which is a complete contradiction of itself as fascism is a far left ideology (government control with private (puppet) ownership of business). Theoretically (and practically) speaking, socialism does not and can not exist on and of its own as a permanent state of things. Socialism is a milestone on the road to communism, and it must move either towards or against communism by definition. It is a transitory state.

Secondly, the most powerful form of left-leaning government (call it socialism, communism, marxism, fascism, whatever) is the one which has convinced its people that they are free, while controlling them in almost every aspect. We are as "free" as any nation on earth, or more so, yet we have moved drastically in the direction of the left over the last 100 years. The key is smokescreens, red herrings, and double talk, all which work very effectively in a population which has been conditioned for a long period of time and in a gradual, incrementalist way. We all assume that bacon and eggs for breakfast is a long and glorious tradition from time immemorial, but look up the history and be surprised. It wasn't until shortly after the turn of the last century that it was introduced to the public. Read about it here http://www.rawbloom.com/1/post/2010/3/hearty-breakfast-a-history-of-bacon-and-eggs.html. So conditioning of the puiblic is both very real and very subtle. In this country, we are much farther left than anyone in the public eye, media, or government will ever admit. A thorough study of early American history will convince you that if the founding fathers were alive today, they would think that this was a different country from the one they fought and died to bring about.

  • Would Arnold make a good president?   1 year 29 weeks ago

Yeah, I don't think so. While I liked Arnold initially, that came to a quick halt after he started taking action in the state. California is now the poster child for how not to run a state, with deficits that boggle the mind and reulations that could strangle a python.

The only candidate who would be worse for the state of Kalifornia is the one who now occupies the governership, Moon Doggie Jerry Brown. Californians, it's time to either move or go ahead and drop acid together so the wild ride into hell won't be as discernable.

  • Was the President’s Twitter Town Hall an Effective Use of His Time?   1 year 29 weeks ago

This was a ridiculous waste of his time, but that is nothing new. I respect the fact that he is embracing new technologies as a form of communication, but twitter is not the place for a discussion of depth with the people.

He nor anyone else can give good explanations of their positions, plans, and goals in 140 characters per answer. Not only did this appear as a stunt, it was a good one. Obama does his best not to answer questions, as with most politicians. Because of the forum he was allowed to do what he does best, which is give short, quippy, meaningless feel -good answers that need to have some serious discussion. He is not capable of serious discussion, and he has proven it time and again.

  • British Youths Rage and Riot, British Men Fight Back   1 year 30 weeks ago

This event was completely heart breaking for me. I spent the summer of '09 in London and grew to love the culture and the people so much. It hurt to see the people destroying their own city like this. The youth just feel so neglected and betrayed and they didn't know where to place their anger, so they resorted to destruction and violence. I certainly wish they had taken all of that passion and used it in a way that would have really been able to help the situation instead of make it worse.

  • America Behind Bars: What is Prison Life Really Like?   1 year 30 weeks ago

I have family members who have had friends in prison, and I was shocked by a few of the things that I witnessed. I was surprised by how much access the prisoners had to people who were not in prison, and I was surprised that the prisoner was harrassing people on the outside to give them money so that they could buy things in prison. One of the things they wanted to buy was more phone time to call more people from prison.

I do think prisoners should get to speak to loved ones from prison, but I feel that this should be treated as a priviledge. They were put in prison to be seperated from society and to reflect on the crimes they have commited. I agree that there should be some kind of reform and educational program bettering criminals while they are in prison. The prisoners who seem to be putting in the time to better themselves can be rewarded with phone calls. The said part is that most prisons are over run and can barely afford to house the prisoners they have, so there is a slim chance that they could ever implement anything like this.

  • What’s In The Can? Weird Science Explodes With Energy Drinks   1 year 30 weeks ago

Most people I know who drink energy drinks are so addicted to the feelings they get from them, that they know that the drinks are terrible for them, but do not care. I actually became a little addicted to the 5-hour energy shots while working 3 jobs. These drinks energize you with caffiene and 2,000% of your daily B-Vitamin suggested intake. I found that when I tried to quit drinking them, my body had withdrawls. I felt much more tired than I was before I had started drinking them and had terrible headaches. I started taking vitimans and supplements to help get me through.

  • 2011 Droughts are Some of the Worst in Decades   1 year 30 weeks ago

I believe that this is evidence of weather patterns that have been changed due to climate change. I do not understand why people ignore something that is being backed up by numerous scientific studies. I think they were mislead by the term "global warming."

Global warming does not simply mean everything gets a little warmer; it means climate shifts all over the world due to certain areas becomeing warmer. The world is its own giant ecosystem, and it works just like any other system would. When there is a change to one area, unexpected reations are going to occur in others. We need to look into the real causes of global warming and take them seriously, instead of ignoring them and placing the blame on God.

  • Contagion and a Deadly Worldwide Pandemic – Does The Movie Get It Right?   1 year 30 weeks ago

Of course there is always the chance that a virus could spread. That is in their nature. However, there is a difference between being prepard and being overly terrified. I think people should make themselves aware of the dangers, but not let the chance of something that has a very small chance of happening, ruin their lives with fear. Having people develop OCD and anxiety is not going to help. Any time there is such a large population, so closely connected with one another, a virus is always a threat. We just have to learn how to minimize the threat and live our lives.

  • Spiderman 4 - The Amazing Spiderman - Comic Hero Returns to Theaters   1 year 30 weeks ago

I don't think it's accurate to call it Spiderman 4. It's a completely new franchise. I feel that many had grown tired of the old franchise and cast, so I hope this one gets off to an exciting start. The beauty of these long running comic book series is that there are usually endless plotlines to discover. It will probably do descently just because of all of the faithful Spiderman fans alone.

Although I love a lot of the super hero flicks, I kind of hope the craze is going to be toning down a bit. It's starting to take away from the fun when there are so many at once. I don't know how much truth there is to the rumor, but I heard that there is gong to be a DC justice league movie in the works to compete with the Avengers movie. I guess it doesn't help that we have the two groups trying to out-do each other.

  • Sugar – The Sweet Taste of Poison   1 year 30 weeks ago

For some reason, sugar has become a staple ingredient in our homes. Without it, people feel deprived. In order to cut back to an acceptable amount of daily intake, most would have to make major lifestyle changes. People are just too lazy to follow through with that.

Many switch to artificial sweeteners, but relying on those can be damaging to your body as well. Artificial sweeteners trigger your brain as if your body is still receiving sugar. Therefore your metabolism and insulin production adjusts as if you are consuming sugar. This, among other factors, make artificial sweeteners almost as dangerous as sugar.

  • America's Toxic Food Supply is Killing Us - What You Didn't Know   1 year 30 weeks ago

I agree that we all need to look more closely at the ingredients within our food. I don't think that the government or food industry is actively trying to kill us, however. This happens because the dangerous or fattening ingredients tend to allow the foods to be made faster, cheaper, and sometimes addictive. The food industry keeps the cost low and the demand sky high. What also factors into this is that people do not speak out enough as long as they get the foods they like, and get them at a cheap cost.

People shouldn't have to live in complete fear of everything they eat, but they should make the effort to stay educated and watch for red flags.

  • Is America Doomed to Fall Like the Roman Empire?   1 year 30 weeks ago

America may not stay the world super power, and people need to learn how to cope with that. It is natural for power to gradually shift, we as a country, just aren't used to that. I'm sure that the U.K. felt a bit of this struggle when America rose to power. Not being the biggest super power nation does not necessarily mean that our country will go through major changes.

  • Botnets In The Sky – Danger from Hackers Transforms to New Heights   1 year 30 weeks ago

There are a lot of dangers out there that are right in your face. Hackers have become very clever. There are so many instances online when a link is strategically placed, or a contact form. There are many hackers who take advantage of the recession to steal information. They have job seekers fill out forms, or click on links to "apply" for a position. The next thing you know, the computer has a virus or the applicant's information is stolen.

Most internet savvy people know to look for these types of situations, but some are not all that easy to spot. Also, people who are not used to looking for these risks, can easily become victims.

  • Crime Reduction in Glasgow -- Why America Can't Follow   1 year 30 weeks ago

Glasgow definitely has the right idea. The approaches they are taking are creating a stronger sense of community. Even though urban areas have higher densities of people, there tends to be less of a connection between people. People are less likely to commit a violent crime if they feel a connection to their town and its people. I feel that America could really improve its statistics if it implemented a few of Glasgow's strategies. Make the youth feel that they can not only improve their lives, but improve their cities and states. The youth of today certainly need positive motivation.

  • Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sports: Is There a Happy Medium That Can Be Reached?   1 year 30 weeks ago

I had never quite thought about players who use performance enhancers that aren't technically dangerous. We always hear about the ones that have negative effects, but what about players who use supplements that are enhancers, but don't have any known negative side effects?

There is a line between trying to improve yourself and doing something that is considered cheating. Those lines can easily become blurred.

I really don't know how they can regulate all methods of enhancement. The players are going to be constantly looking for the edge that will put them ahead. I just feel that it makes sports less fun the watch if the playing field is clearly very uneven.

  • Why Survival Shows Are Such A Hit   1 year 30 weeks ago
Hi Ashley. I'm happy that you enjoy watching the show, it shows that the program does have a wider audience than many would actually think it would. Of course I (and I'm sure that you also)realize that Bear does have a "safety net" if you will as far as having staff and crew along just in case something really really gets out of hand. As with much of reality television, there is always some sort of a script, and of course a safety valve.
  • Is the American Dream a Fantasy?   1 year 30 weeks ago
Clarencwr... Honestly, the more that I talk about this subject the more depressed I become...most of the time.
  • Is the American Dream a Fantasy?   1 year 30 weeks ago
Hi Ashley. When I was much younger, the American dream was about things like "Mom's Apple Pie," "Owning A New Car," and the biggie of course was of course "Home Ownership." Today (54 years later) this definitely is not the same world that I grew up in. From the little bucolic town that I grew up in, that has changed over the last 20 or so years to become a town that almost mirrors a larger city, with a main drag that people almost routinely travel at 50 miles an hour which in my time as a youth was unheard of to having to find a new way to earn a living instead of the old traditional means. Certainly it's gotten much harder to afford "that dream" that I grew up thinking all of us would be able to achieve, but as I read about my governor trying to repeal certain laws that will actually lower the amount of taxes that rich people pay on their earnings to spur on "their economic recovery," well...I just have to shake my head a bit an wonder when I might be able to stop working...even as a freelance writer. I guess I'll be working till my fingers fall off
  • Why Survival Shows Are Such A Hit   1 year 30 weeks ago

I can certainly testify that there are women out there who love watching these survival men. It's nice to see courage that is real. There is nothing more attractive than raw bravery.

I personally love Man vs. Wild. I am drawn to this show, not only because of the appealing qualities of Bear himself, but because they tend to push the limits. That show determines what the worst case scenerio would be in any given environment, then they put him in it. It's completely compelling.

  • The Death Of Grandma - First The MILF, Now The GILF   1 year 30 weeks ago

This article assumes that women were the originators of terms like "MiLF". I assure you, that slang was created by men.

Yes, women are choosing different paths than they once had. They are taking chances, becoming more powerful, and becoming more outspoken. This generally makes them more attractive to men, but at the same time scares them. They are left to come up with ways to degrade them, like writing articles like this.

  • Tornado Disaster Recovery in Joplin, Missouri   1 year 30 weeks ago

I do feel that this disastor unfortunately did not receive as much attention as it should have. This happened on the heels of international disastors and did not get the air time it should have. I felt like people were talking about it for one day, maybe two, then it was old news. i'm sure it wasn't old news for the people who were without homes, and in some cases, family and friends. I hope these people are doing well now.

  • Preparing for Armageddon - Don't Be Scammed by Solar Shysters   1 year 30 weeks ago

One of the most effective marketing tools is fear. People will buy into anything if you scare them enough. People can be scared into changing their entire lifestyle if you're convincing enough.

The end of the world scare tactics are the worst. Not only are people being taken advantage of, but if enough people believe, there will be fewer and fewer people out there who believe that taking care of our planet is a worthwile investment. Please keep your head on your shoulders for the sake of the people out here who plan on staying here for a while.

  • Radical Islam - How Real Is The Threat?   1 year 30 weeks ago

I agree that these are all real threats to the U.S., but I do not agree that we should take on the mentality of "kill them before they kill us." Have we forgotten how to be the bigger man? By fighting violence with more violence, you become part of the bigger problem.

I do believe that we need to take precautions and keep Americans safe, but we are only going to be putting more of a target on our backs if we try to police the world.

  • Is the American Dream a Fantasy?   1 year 30 weeks ago

The American dream has always been a fantasy. The "picture perfect" American family was invented long ago in order to sell products to Americans. The American dream is very similar. The American dream has never really been a real thing. For one thing, one person's American dream can differ wildly from someone else's. Your dreams are only going to take you as far as you are willing to work at it.
